The table lists the land area which is covered by forests on the seven continents in three different years, 1990, 2000, and 2005. The units are measured in millions of hectares.

Overall, it is obvious that Asia and Europe had an increase in the proportion of forested land, whereas Africa, North America, Oceania, and South America experienced a decrease.

In 1990, Europe has the largest area forests in the world, with 989 million hectares, compared to 946 million hectares in South America. Likewise, the proportion of forested land in Asia also rose from 576 million hectares in 1990 to 584 million hectares in 2005. While there was a noticeable rise in the number of forests in Europe, reaching about 998 million in 2000 to 1001 million in 2005.

However, in Oceania and Africa, the proportion of land covered by forests decreased. Oceania in 1990 figure of 199 million fell to 198 million in 2000 and is estimated to continue to fall to 197 million in 2005. Africa had a drop from 749 million in 1990 to 709 million in 2000, and this figure plummeted to 691 million in 2005.
