What's the question?

First try to paraphrase the question.

Then give an overview of what you see; zoom out-what do you see? Two lines went up, one didn't change much and the other went down.

Then zoom in and try to describe salient features. In one paragraph try to deal with two lines that have similar trends in some ways. For example, the yellow and black line started the period near each other, then one went up and the other down.

You should describe the figures in relation to time, so try to divide the period into meaningful parts.

In the next paragraph, cover the lines blue and green.

Be careful not to include any outside information in your report.

Task 1 asks you to write about a figure or a table.

A figure is an illustration inserted in the text of an article. The kinds of figures are line graphs, bar charts, pie charts, maps, and process maps. Sometimes the figure will have a combination of these elements, such as a line graph and table together.

Task 1 shows your skills in writing for a math or science professor. So you need to concentrate on math/science vocabulary. Task 2 shows your skills in expressing opinions and feelings. The vocabulary you should use in Task 2 is very different from Task 1.

The first thing you need is vocabulary words related to these figures.

For a line graph, there is the X-Axis, the Y-Axis and their labels, and the units of measure.
A line graph may have more than one line. These are data series. Each series has a sequence of data values.

The basic organization of paragraphs in Task 1 are:

Paragraph 1: Write about the components of the figure, not the data. What is the subject? What is the time frame? What is shown on the Y-Axis?

Paragraph 2:

Find two or three significant observations about the data. Do comparisons rather than just repeating the data values. Many times it is useful to do simple arithmetic -addition, computing ratios or percentages. This will get you a higher score.

Paragraph 3: Write more about the details in the data.

The total word count is minimum 150 words.

For line graphs, these are useful vocabulary words: correlated, trend, linear, exponential, variation / vary, and range.

Many students use "fluctuation" and "peak" incorrectly.

Here are examples of these misused words:

Fluctuation is random or cyclical variation around a trend line. You need a trend line to have fluctuations. Changes in data values over time without any trend is just variation.

A peak is a high point in the data on a line graph. The values before and after the peak are lower than the peak. This graph has one peak. The last point is a high value, but it is not a peak because you cannot see the lower data values after that last point in time. It might go down, but it might continue going up.
