The graph below shows the unemployment rates in the US and Japan between March 1993 and March 1999.


The line graph compares the proportion of unemployed people in the US and Japan through the period from March 1993 to March 1999.

It is obvious that the unemployment rates of these two countries changed oppositely. The propotion of the workforce unemployed in Japan rose steadily between 1993 and 1999, while the figure for America fell.

In March 1993, the unemployment rate in the USA was about 7% compared with only 2.5% in Japan. The following four years, the American unemployment rate showed a downward trend about 5 %, whereas the figure for Japan rose significantly to just under 4.5%.

Nevertheless, in 1998, both nations almost had the same unemployment percentage just over 5%, which means Japan's rate reached the highest point, while US' rate went to the lowest. In 1999, jobless percentage in the USA was just above 4.0%, while this rate in Japan was more than double than the initial rate of their unemployment.
