The idea that universities should quip widespread grasp or practical skills for students remains a source of controversy. While some people think that learners can achieve benefits from being taught general theory, others hold different idea that training students with knowledge that is necessary for work is more important. On the one hand, concentrating on educating people with extensively general knowledge is useful for learners as a whole. Students who gain comprehensive knowledge could apply their understanding in different work. Actually, jobs are various and usually changed. Therefore, with broad knowledge, commuters may handle and enhance their capacity to adapt with job requirements. Besides, not all people find suitable jobs as the original intention. Hence, from fundamental theories, they could develop themselves to match with new jobs. For example, in Vietnam, statistics have showed that approximately 50%-graduated students must work contrary to the initial specialized training.

On the other hand, contrasting opinions are raised in supporting for the idea that universities should train students with skills which jobs require.
