IELTS WRINGTING TASK 2. CHILD PUNISHMENT. PLEASE GIVE COMMENTS.

Answer

It is vital for children's mental and psychological development that they can differentiate between what is correct and what is wrong. Some support the view that punishment should be incorporated into teaching children this concept. In my opinion, punishment is needed to help youngsters to develop a good moral code only when it is used properly.

In educating children, apart from rewards and compliments, punishment and reprimand also prove effective tools in many cases. First, small children have different mindsets to those of adult. Although the main method of teaching children is still loving and gentle guidance, some persistent behaviours can not be rectified by this approach and require mean such as punishment. For example, children who show signs of disobedience or dishonest repeatedly without any redemption can not be made to change their mind in a hope that they can change by themselves so punishing is important to let them know that it is wrong to do so and help them to remember this particular lesson.

However indispensable as an educating tool, punishment methods should be effective and have their own restriction so that teachers and parents do not abuse their youngsters. In order to change everyone's way of thinking, even small children, it is crucial that they know that they have done wrong and be willing to accept the price. Actions that actually help are those that cause only a mild sense of irritation and remorse such as community works and repetitive boring tasks. In contrast, too harsh treatments may be counter-productive as they prompt discontentment so educators should avoid using them. For instance, corporal punishment does not only inflict physical suffering but also contain side effect such as developing a tendency toward violence for the small subjects.

In summary, it is not excessive to use heavy tool like penalty and punishment to help the young to develop proper behavior and mindset. Nevertheless, parents and teaches need to be selective when utilizing this method so as to not cause unexpected results.
