IELTS-what English

I noticed that the IELTS is more and more popular in the USA and listening test also include US accent and not just British, New Zealand and Australian as it has been before. So I wonder: is the IELTS based on British English? What I know is that American and British spelling is allowed...

Hello, karol, Yes, I believe it was originally a joint British - Australian effort, but now, like the other major language proficiency tests, it attempts to minimize the already minor differences in the core Englishes and offers a range of accents in its listening portions. To my knowledge, however, there has never been any testing of or penalty for accepted spelling variants.

Thanks for your answer... And what about vocabulary? It is used British vocabulary or mix of Australian, American and British words? That sounds strange...

A lot of tests and text books use a mixture of different accents and dialects. I see many American terms used in textbooks for students in the UK. It is sometimes the way the language is collected but also as English is the Lingua-franca and not everybody learns it to speak to native speakers but other people who speak English.
