In recent years, the family structure has changed, as well as family roles. What types of changes are occurring? Do you think the changes are positive or negative?
It is true that the pattern of the family has been changing over recent years. This essay will analyze some main differences in the structure of family and its member's roles and I think that these changes have both positive and negative impacts on equal measure.
The modern life has led to two main changes in terms of families' structure and roles of each member. In the past, traditional households often consist of different generations living under the same roof in rural areas to take care of each other. However, the increasingly competitive job market has forced a huge number of young people to flock to big cities in search of job opportunities and therefore they live alone or build nuclear families instead of returning the countryside to live with older generations. Furthermore, men often acted as breadwinners who are responsible for most of the families' income while women cooked and looked after their children. However, some households in the modern world have seen a reversal of roles where mothers have more chances to pursue their own career and earn enough money for a living to support their family, but fathers assume responsibility as stay-at-home dads.
In my opinion, if young people choose to live far from their parents and grandparents, they will not have the chance to learn valuable experience passed on to different generations. A prime example is that grandparents with their life skills usually use traditional methods to treat sick children, preventing them from side effects of drugs that are often used widely by young parents due to the lack of knowledge. On the other hand, mothers’ salaries are a contributing factor which releases the burden on fathers and ensure stable finance for their children in the future. In fact, more and more Vietnamese students have gone to developed countries to learn at famous universities despite high tuition fees, which is attributable to financial support from both working parents.
In conclusion, there are some changes related to the size of each family and parental roles and my own perspective is that people are losing the connection between generations but have a better financial background.
