IELTS task 2: Traditional or online newspapers?

Although more and more people read news on the internet, newspapers will remain the most important source of news. Do you agree or disagree?

Nowadays, online newspapers have grown in importance but some people argue that traditional newspapers still take a leading role in social media. In my opinion, I totally disagree with this idea.

The speed and convenience of the Internet in this digital era have led to the widely increasing popularity of online newspapers. First, internet is able to provide up-to-the-minute news as it happens. Not being a computer buff, one person can keep himself or herself updated to the latest events around the world via a smarted phone connected to wi-fi. Secondly, people are intended to use internet more often due to its availability. This trend will continue in the future because the more widespread accessibility of the internet is, the more people will come to rely on it as their news source.

In contrast, conventional newspapers have some drawbacks which can affect their popularity. One major disincentive of relying on normal press is the cost. Compared with freely available online newspapers, the traditional ones are facing the problem of falling circulation figures. Some famous US newspapers have now introduced their online versions alongside their printed editions in an attempt to arrest this trend. From environmental perspective, there is a body of public opinion who rejects buying newspapers because this involves cutting and transporting trees to the paper mills. While this may not be a major factor at present, I think this environmental argument will almost certainly gain ground in the near future.

In conclusion, I would argue that the decline in conventional newspapers will continue as an undeniable tendency because people would rather choose some convenient and easily accessible ways of catching up on news and coverage such as online newspapers.
