Ielts task 2: The use of alternative sources of energy is encouraged

Fossil fuels is the main source of energy. In some countries, the use of alternative sources of energy is encouraged. To what extent do you think is it a positive and negative development?

In contemporary society, many things in daily life are operated by energy source. While the use of alternative energy sources has not been prevalent for its drawbacks, I believe that the advantages of these sources of energy are more significant than the drawbacks.

There are several disadvantages of using other energy sources such as renewable energy and nuclear power. First, it seems hard to have such sources of energy because of geographical difficuties. Take tidal power for example. This kind of energy is just useful to the countries that have coastlines. That is to say, it is unavailable to many countries that do not have any coastlines such as Laos and Nepal. Therefore, it is impossible to install tidal power in such countries. Second, there is an utter waste of public funds to have alternative sources of energy. In many developing countries, there are still more pressing problems such as education, health care and food that need national budgets to be tackled. Thus, investing in other energy sources is likely to put a burden on the government budget and have negative effects on other sectors.

Despite aforementioned downside, I believe that the benefits of alternative energy sources are greater. For one thing, alternative sources of energy is more sustainable than finite fossil fuels. This means that such energy can be used to produce a vast amount of electricity without wasting limited natural resources such as coal, oil and gas in order to meet the needs of the public and factories. Another benefit is that these kinds of energy sources might be much cleaner than fossil fuels. The consumption of these sources of energy can significantly reduce carbon emissions that acts as a main culprit of global warming. As a result, many nations should consider alternative sources of energy as a solution to high oil and gas price, increasing demand for electricity and worries about pollution and climate change.

In conclusion, although the consumption of alternative energy sources has disadvantages, I believe that it it more likely to have positive impacts on society.
