IELTS TASK 2: The reasons and consequences of delayed parenthood

In many countries, men and women are having babies later. What are the reasons? What are the effects on society and the family?

In many places, there have been an increasing number of couples who have decided to delay their parenthood. The reason for this ongoing phenomenon varies from financial considerations to preparation time. There are also numerous developmental and economic ramifications stemming from this.

There are many underlying reasons why men and women want to have babies later in their lives. One of the chief reasons is the financial burden associated with child-rearing. When couples have kids, they are legally responsible for raising their own offspring, which usually entails spending a considerable amount of money on child support, health care, education, and so on. This may deter them from having children early on as they are unable to afford such fees. Likewise, some couples need time to prepare for parenthood so that they can be better equipped with the necessary parental skills. By doing so, they can ensure that their children can grow up in a salubrious environment.

Numerous problems can arise from this ongoing social phenomenon. First and foremost, it can lead to population aging. This can occur when the number of elderly people exceeds that of children due to low fertility rates. This is especially true when life expectancy is on the rise in many countries. Furthermore, delayed parenthood often means only one child because of reduced fertility in parents. Only children usually lack the useful social skills that those with siblings have. Consequently, they may be subjected to social anxiety and diffidence later in their life.

In conclusion, although there are some great benefits in starting a family later, they cannot compensate for the negative effects on the economy and children’s development.
