Topic: In the modern world it is possible to shop, work and communicate with people via the Internet and live without any face-to-face contact with others. Is this a positive or negative development?
It is true that present-day people are able to live without real life interaction as online shopping, working and communication are feasible. I personally believe that this phenomenon could be both positive and negative in equal measure.
On the one hand, the Internet has made people’s life become extremely convenient in many ways. It is undeniable that globalization has revolutionized the world economy with the help of cyberspace, which results in more and more employees coming from various nations work for the same corporation. However, communication among colleagues is still possible with the help of online platforms despite geographical barriers. Moreover, virtual communication would save people a significant amount of time and petrol allocated for travelling. For example, conferences and meetings can be organized on the Internet, which is a potential solution for air pollution and traffic jam during rush hour.
On the other hand, humans are by nature social animals; therefore, real life interaction is indispensable. While online conversations can be advantageous in certain circumstances, face-to-face contact, which includes both verbal and non-verbal communication, definitely outweighs its counterpart with regard to the efficiency of message delivery. For instance, misunderstanding among people may emerge within online forums due to the lack of facial expressions and gestures. Moreover, intimate relationships can hardly be maintained if physical interaction is completely replaced by online communication. There is no doubt that the Internet fails to build mutual trust among people since their inner attitudes and emotions can be concealed through long-distance communication.
In conclusion, although the aforementioned social development has brought significant values to the society, its negative impacts still remain detrimental. (280 words)
