IELTS TASK 2 (self-employed)

Topic:

Nowadays many people choose to be self-employed, rather than to work for a company or organisation. Why might this be the case? What could be the disadvantages of being self-employed?

It is true that people have various choices about what kind of jobs they want to take. Some people may choose to work for a company while there are more prefer to be their own employers. I believe that there are several reasons behind this trend and also it brings a main drawback to our society.

From my perspective, the first and foremost reason for this trend is that being a self-employed person can obtain more freedom in their lives. Living in a competitive society, people always have a gruelling schedule and feel pressured. For office workers, they may have to face a rich variety of difficulties in the workplace such as building a relationship between their employers and themselves and managing to have a strong and friendly relationship with colleagues. In the long run, people may get tired of jobs or even their lives. Besides, as a self-employed person, people can have more leisure time to take good care of their family. It is unnecessary for parents to worry about their children during working hours. As a result, more and more people would choose to be self-employed.

However, the tendency of self-employed does lead to a major shortcoming in our lives. In my view, it is possible that people may lose connection and interaction with others. Employees can get a sense of community from companies or business and someone even takes colleagues as their family. As a consequence, if people opt to work at home, instead of going to the workplace, they may lose social bond which is absolutely a detriment to our mental health.

In conclusion, it is reasonable why this trend happened and what is the disadvantage of it for individuals.
