Ielts task 2: Some people think that strict punishments for driving offenses are the only way to reduce traffic accidents. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Traffic accidents are a perennial problem in many countries. Some people believe that the only way to reduce road accidents is to implement heavy punishments on drivers. However, I am of the opinion that there are other effective ways to promote safe driving on road.
On the one hand, penalties would lead to behavioral changes among drivers. These punishments act as a deterrence against lawbreaking or repetition of driving offenses. For example, if people had their driving license suspended or received a sentence just for using mobile phones while driving, they would always obey the laws. As a result, drivers will be more disciplined and alert, which results in lessening traffic accidents.
On the other hands, traffic collisions can be reduced by applying other measures besides punishing drivers. First, improving road signs allows drivers to avoid unnecessary accidents. Larger signs can be put at locations where accidents frequently occur or where traffic moves at high speed so that drivers pay extra attention to their driving. Second, people should be educated before they take the wheel by adding a compulsory lesson in their driving test. By doing this, they would be aware of the serious consequences of not abiding by the rules. Third, another way to reduce traffic accidents is to invest in public transport, which allows more people to commute rather than driving to work.
In conclusion, although penalizing offensive drivers seems to be a possible choice to encourage safe ride I personally believe that the improvement of traffic signs, education and investment in public transportation would lead to the reduction of road accidents.
