Essay & Composition Writing

Ielts task 2. Please review my essay. Thank you in advance.

People are surrounded by many kinds of advertising which can influence their life. Do the positive effects of this trend outweigh the negative effects?

In the digital world, people can be exposed to several brands and messages that promote a specific product on both social media when they surf the web and traditional advertising on the street. Though it may sometimes have benefits, I think its disadvantages are more significant.

On the one hand, it is undeniable that advertising has some positive effects. First, by describing products in the same category on mass media, consumers obtain information about them and have a choice between the old items which they have already used and the new one which is described with new strength. By this way, each person can approach the most appropriate products for them, because different people have different priorities. For example, I might prefer a cheaper phone with limited functions while my friend like the newest version even though it is pricy. Second, advertising industry creates a substantial quantity of job which contributes to the national economic growth and reduces the joblessness. To make a simple advertisement like a banner, there must be a designer, a content writer, and a group to build a plan to make it popular among citizens. The bigger investment for advertising is, the more job it creates.

On the other hand, I think the negative impacts of advertisements outweigh its beneficial effects. The more money the company invests in running advertisements for a specific product, the more expensive it is. Consequently, consumers have to purchase it with an expense that is far beyond its real value. Additionally, with too much product presentations, consumers often pay money for redundant things just because they think these items might be useful in some situation in the future. This phenomenon is especially true for the shock discount programs that we saw on the internet because these programs create a feeling of gaining profit for us and attempt to influence the purchasing decisions. Furthermore, the content of advertisements is not always truthfully, especially when it comes to functional foods. They might exaggerate the efficacy to boost consumption without real demonstration.

In conclusion, though there might be some advantages if we are exposed to advertising, I believe that its harmful impacts are more significant.
