Topic: When designing a building, the most important factor is intended use of the building rather than its outward appearance. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Essay:

Many people believe that the utilization of building is the mainstream consideration at the design state. The appearance of the building from outside is an unimportant factor. While constructions were built to serve intended purpose, I disagree that this is necessarily the most important element in the design.

The intended use of the building is, of course, very important. In term of commercial, shop facades require a large glass windows in order to draw pedestrian’ attention in shop’s displayed goods. This is essential for sale purpose though sometimes those windows do not blend in with surrounding landscape thus become the eyesores. From the perspective of city planners, the population increasing rapidly lead to the exorbitant price of land. In order to come up with affordable housing price, hideous high-rise buildings have been constructed as the only solution for expensive residential problem of urban dwellers.

The design of the buildings to serve a specific function, however this does not mean that we should overlook the aesthetic of the buildings. Although the construction of ugly utilitarian structures like multi-story car parks is an inevitable consequence of modern living, new house and offices or store can combine the pleasing design with their useful function. The centres of cities like Paris show that it is possible for historical buildings to possess character, which is not incompatible with their commercial purpose as stores, offices and apartments.

In conclusion, I advocate the view that the outward appearance is as important for designers and planners to consider as the functions of buildings.
