IELTS task 2: Please check my essay

Hi! This is not the first time I post an essay answering this topic. But after quite a long time since the first one, I decided to write another essay for the same topic in order to be able to form a comparison. If you do not mind I would sincerely appreciate your help on this matter again.

Question:

The only way to improve road safety is to give stricter punishments on driving offenses. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Answer:

The number of road accidents is constantly increasing in recent years. To deal with this pressing issue, many solutions have emerged and giving stricter punishments is one of them. I personally support this idea, however, I believe that there are more that we can do side-by-side to gain the best outcome.

On the one hand, I cannot imagine how the law would be empowered without legal punishments. It is an indispensable part of the system and it contributes a great deal in the way we maintain the efficiency of the entire constitution. It is a prevalent notion that the stricter punishments are, the more people are aware of what they might face after committing offenses. For instance, driving while intoxicated could be considered a crime and the offenders can even be imprisoned. Besides, confiscation of driving licenses should be given more often so that they will no longer pose a danger to innocent lives.

On the other hand, road education must come hand in hand with harsh punishments, as well as raising more awareness about driving responsibly for your own and people's sake. This will not only fill the gaps in their knowledge about road safety but also spread the message widely and swiftly. For example, children must learn from a very young age that driving requires a great deal of carefulness, that every decision they make on the road can affect hundreds of other lives.

In brief, stricter punishments is undoubtedly vital to improving road safety, but some other measures such as road education must accompany it in order to gain the best results. This accomplishment cannot be achieved by night, it requires constant implementation and the voluntary adherence from the citizens as well.
