Some universities offer online courses as an alternative to classes delivered on campus. Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
A sheer number of universities offer online education rather than traditional courses. While there are several drawbacks of internet-based learning, I would argue that its benefits are more significant.
There are two main drawbacks related to online education. First of all, internet-based learning has a negative effect on peer supports, discussion, and exchange of ideas. This means that those who take online courses are likely to have less direct interaction with their classmates and face to face meetings with their teachers than those who attend traditional courses. In addition, students who do not have possess an independent study habit may not do homework and exam revision on top of attending lessons every day without teachers’ supervision. To illustrate, they lack motivation and the element of competition that face-to-face group work brings.
However, in my opinion, there are undeniable benefits of online education. The foremost is that students can study in a flexible way and cover the materials at their own pace. Specifically, they can study anywhere and anytime as long as they feel comfortable. Secondly, Online education offers open access to those who are willing to study regardless of age, location, background, and ability. As a good example is that in this day and age, people who aspire to enroll in online MBA courses in different countries can take it easily, which would be impossible in the day before the internet-based education.
In conclusion, all things considered, although I recognize some possible drawbacks of online education, I believe that university should open online courses wisely.
