IELTS Task 2: Newspaper

Some people think that newspapers are the best way to learn news. However, others believe that they can learn new better through other media. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

People’s opinions on learning news differ considerably. Some people believe that newspapers are an optimal way to update news, there are some arguments that other media would be better in helping people stay up-to-date. This essay will discuss both viewpoints; however, I am more in favour of the latter opinion.

One of the reasons why people lean towards newspapers is a high quality coverage of news. As broadsheets are published by major publishers, there is a strict censorship of what to be presented on the papers so as not to ruin the reputation of the company. Therefore, people have to make no suspicion about the authenticity of the news they get.

On the other hand, despite the great advantage of newspapers mentioned above, I believe that this is not the best way possible to learn news. Nowadays, with the development of technology, smartphones and digital devices are all the rage worldwide. Other media, including online newspapers and social-networking sites such as Facebook or Twitter enable people to get access to news at anywhere in anytime. Since people can get news instantly with just the click of a mouse, these media definitely bring about much more convenience, compared to traditional newspapers whose frequency is only one issue per day. What is more, the Internet offers a complete freedom of the press, which means people can look at things and situations in novel ways and from different angels and perspectives. However, this freedom should be limited to a certain extent, or else people could get into trouble in light of the distortion of news caused by unscrupulous journalists and writers.

In conclusion, although newspapers ensure a verification of news, from my personal perspective I believe that other media could do better in terms of accessibility, updatability as well as the freedom of the press. However, due to the lack of verification from online sources, people should remain conscious and avoid fake news in order not to trigger any adverse effects on the society.
