Many museums and historical sites are mainly visited by tourists but not local people. Why is that the case and what can be done to attract more local people to visit these places?

Museums and historical sites are more appealing to visitors than to local people. In my opinion, given that can be attributed to two reasons, and some feasible solutions should be taken into account to mitigate this issue.

One of the reasons that entrance tickets are expensive for local inhabitants to afford. For instance, in Hue city, it is rather hard for local inhabitants to make ends meet, let alone to spend money on visiting some famous sites there. To tackle this problem, local administrations could offer discount prices to the poor or students. For example, Ho Chi Minh city‘s authority gives a 20% discount on entrance tickets for students in some places such as temples, churches, and museums.

Despite many discounts on entrance tickets for students, however, Ho Chi Minh city's museums still experiences a low number of visits from local students. One explanation is that historical places are too familiar to local residents. Compared with well-known sites, people tend to visit new places more often as they want to acquire new experiences. There are multiple solutions to this issue, namely culture - promoting events, exhibitions every month or annual festivals. Regarding this problem, Hue's festival may serve as a successful example. Every other year, Hue imperial city holds the festival with different themes such as Hue’s traditional arts, Hue’s street-food culture or Hue’s history. Thanks to this, the local residents become excited about their own culture and history, thereby having a good grasp of knowledge about their hometown.

In conclusion, exorbitant prices and people’s familiarity with historic monument are two reasons explaining why local people are less interested in their original sites than in other places. And measures include discounts, new events, and annual festivals that could be implemented to address this trend.
