Ielts task 2: have a car, a tv and a fridge

It is suggested that everyone wants to have a car, a television and a fridge. Do disadvantages of this development for society outweigh advantages?

It is true that almost of the people want to own a car, a television and a refrigerator as a basic necessity of life. While this brings several benefits, I contend that the disadvantages of this trend are greater than their positives.

There are several positive effects of having these household appliances and a private vehicle. The first advantage is the economic growth. A growing demand for such things leads to an increase of sales figures, that is to say, revenue from large amounts of money spent on cars, televisions and fridges is a valuable source of revenue for a country's economy. This creates jobs and generates income for the public. Another upside is that people may enjoy the convenience from possessing a car, a television and a fridge. Television gives people latest news and a variety of entertaining channels. In addition, fridges can help people save leftovers and minimize food waste. Cars also help people shelter from bad weather and travel a long distance.

However, I believe that the advantages is outweighed by potential problems. First, personal possessions such as fridges and televisions may put a pressure on electric supply. Therefore, an increasing demand for electricity leads to insufficient electric supply to meet the public's needs. Second, cars might act as a main culprit of air pollution. Admittedly, poisonous emissions from cars impair the air quality. People easily run the risk of health problems such as respiratory system because of frequent inhalation from excessive amounts of exhaust emissions from this type of personal transport.

In conclusion, although owning a car, a fridge and a television has benefits, I believe that the disadvantages of this trend are more significant than the advantages.
