IELTS Task 2 Essay

Some people think that all university students should study whatever they like. Others believe that they should only be allowed to study subjects that will be useful in the future, such as those related to science and technology. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Some people support the idea that university students should be allowed to study whatever major they desire. Others, however, believe that they should be permitted to study a limited subjects that will become practical in the future. I am of the same opinion as that of the first group.

On the one hand, some people believe that students should matriculate for any major they like. First, this opinion gives an opportunity to a nation to develop a knowledge of a wide variety of subjects that will form an educated Society. This can not be attained by the mere studying subjects related to science. Second, studying subjects like history and art provides the students with a chance to see the road from another person's viewpoint and to become knowledgeable about the past. Studying such subjects results in taking lessons and avoiding the mistakes that our ancestors made in a distant past. For instance, by knowing the history behind each culture's achievements, a country would be able to flourish and develop to a huge extent.

On the other hand, a group of people think that students should only get a chance to study subjects which will be useful in the future like the ones related to science and technology. To begin with, these people measure the value of all majors by whether they result in the creation of an object or a service. Subjects like art and literature which has no such results are a sheer waste of governments' as well as families' resources. In addition, studying subjects that are useless in the future will lead to an increasing unemployment trend. Regarding unemployed graduates in these subjects, if more people graduate from university, there will be a growth in joblessness or tending toward menial jobs.

In conclusion, there are opposite opinions about the subjects that should be studied by students in academia. In my view, students should be free to choose any subject they like.
