IELTS Task 2 Essay

ART

Some people think that the government is wasting money on the arts and that this money could be better spent elsewhere. To what extend do you agree with this view?

Art has regained its lost glory and governments are allocating a fair proportion of the tax revenue to preserve it. However, there is no consensus on whether financing in arts is a wastage of money. This essay will argue that some governmental expenses on arts are necessary.

It is apparent that art is important to the contemporary society. It is generally acknowledged that arts can bring anaesthetic pleasure and relieve stress. Research has revealed that beautiful pieces of music are effective in alleviating pressure and tension. Besides, viewing and practising anaesthetic art pieces usually stimulate innovation. Apart from that, arts are often given the crucial responsibility in delivering traditional culture and customs from one generation to the next one. For instance, Aboriginal cultures and languages were passed down via forms of artistic expressions and simple patterns. Additionally, by spending money on developing arts help boosting the local economy. Art galleries can attract tourists from all over the world, generating revenue in return, while local council can generate a number of relevant employment opportunities as the result of increasing tourism

However, there are certainly downsides in utilizing tax revenue on development of arts. Some people argue that available monetary resources could be put to use in infrastructure construction, scientific research and healthcare assistance. This means increasing care of the sick and improved transportation to previously inaccessible areas. Obviously, art is not a critical aspect of the sustainability of human’s life, but the power of art should not be overlooked. Art is enhancing people’s life by leveraging their experiences and empowering people to possess beautiful imagination.

Hence, it is clear to me that spending on arts is beneficial both for an individual and society. Therefore funding arts is not squandering money.
