IELTS Task 2 - Environment. Thanks for your help.

Task 2 - Environment - #02

Fossil fuel is the main source of energy. In some countries, the use of alternative sources of energy is encouraged. Is this positive or negative development?

Studies have shown that fossil fuel is of paramount importance, generating approximately 80% of the world’s energy. However, more governments have committed to emissions reduction targets by encouraging nuclear power and renewables. While these alternatives still have certain drawbacks, they have obviously proven a boon to humans’ life.

On the one hand, fostering alternative sources of power can take its toll on humans due to the problems associated with costs and energy insecurity. There is a likelihood that nuclear power, the explosive non-renewable, can put humanity in jeopardy. As can be seen from Nagasaki and Hiroshima’s incidents, the atomic bombings claimed over 200 thousand lives. As for sustainable energy, they can be prohibitively costly and inaccessible to many countries, especially developing nations. People may be reluctant to switch to these power even if governments offer incentives to push their nations towards an eco-friendly lifestyle.

On the other hand, the transition to other energy sources is undeniably a more sustainable solution to combat environmental deterioration. By utilizing carbon-free power, there will be fewer greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere then less heat is trapped. Low-carbon sources of energy can then help to slow down the speed of global warming and save millions of people from death. Another advantage of decarbonization is the ability to supply a continuous source of clean energy. Because fossil fuels can not replenish themselves and can be exhausted someday, sustainable energy can support the world’s rapidly growing population.

In conclusion, albeit other sources can be pricey and latently hazardous, they are both greener and inexhaustible. Therefore, I am of the opinion that their benefits significantly outstrip their shortcomings in the long term.
