IELTS TASK 2: ENVIRONMENT

Topic: Many people say that we have developed into a “throw-away” culture because we are filling up our environment with so many plastic bags and rubbish that we cannot fully dispose of. To what extent do you agree with this opinion and what measures can you recommned reducing this problem.

One of the most conspicuous trends in the 21st century is that more and more product waste are discharged into the environment. In particular, most of them come from short-lived or disposable items such as canned food, plastic bags and so on. It is true that this problem is strongly influenced by consumerism which called “throw-away society”. This essay aims to present the reasons and discuss solutions to tackle this problem.

To begin with, modern lifestyle has contributed greatly to the increasing amount of waste and garbage produced every day. In which, convenience is put on top, so many people buy packaged or canned food that can be transported from long distances and stored until they need it. In addition, the price of the single-use-only goods is increasingly cheaper given mass-production technology. For many consumers, hence, it is easier to access these products.

To improve the situation, effective waste management should be started with every individual. To be more specific, one can make small adjustments to their consumption style, by using alternatives to disposable plastic items, such as bottles, cups, and cutlery, making a conscious effort to recycle correctly and fixing broken items instead of simply throwing them away. On the other hand, running publicity campaigns is also needful to urge individuals to “rethink” waste. Besides, children should be educated carefully about environmental issues to be likely to change consumption culture in the future.

In conclusion, my stance is that it is not an easy task to reduce the amount of disposable rubbish; however, one also can make the great change if they efforts and inspires other.
