Online classes make conventional classrooms unnecessary. To what extend do you agree or disagree?

In the fourteenth month since the first case of Covid-19, thousands of schools and institutions globally are still confined to virtual learning and have yet to resume their on-campus education. While one school of thought holds that this leads to the redundancy of traditional classes, I firmly oppose this view because of the shortcomings that online courses may bring.

First and foremost, in-person classes play a central role in cultivating interpersonal skills, which remote learning lacks. Students majoring in scientific, musical, or athletic fields are incapable of honing practical skills because elaborate equipment or specific tools are not available at their homes. Citing a piece of news from BBC, a senior girl felt devastated that she could not complete her band performance for graduation due to her inaccessibility to the university’s musical instruments. In addition, distance education makes interactive activities or team presentations no longer as viable as they used to be. It is prevalent that several learners defy to turn on their cameras or microphones to avoid questions.

Other compelling reasons to support physical classrooms are Internet-related problems of digital education. A portion of educators, especially senior professors, encounter difficulties in using cutting-edge technology. Taking my Corporate Finance teacher at the university as an example, he was one-month behind the curriculum because he could not get to grips with the online learning software. Moreover, people from isolated underprivileged areas or bad-off families either get patchy Internet connection or can not provide themselves with technical devices. That gives rise to the interruption that online learners face, thus results in their academic performance deterioration.

In conclusion, web-based courses may take a heavy toll on students in practical majors and those from remote deprived zones. From my perspective, even amidst this prolonged pandemic, the significance of brick-and-mortar education should not be overlooked.
