IELTS TASK 2 (EDUCATION): Are schools obsolete?

Schools are no longer necessary because children can get so much information available through the Internet, and they can study just as well at home. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Given the sheer amount of data on the internet, it has been widely held that students do not need to go to school anymore because they can study just as well at home with the aid of the internet. Personally, I wholeheartedly disagree with the aforementioned sentiment on account of the importance of schools as well as the overwhelming amount of information on the internet.

On the one hand, schools are the places in which students are given the opportunities to cultivate practical skills, in addition to theoretical knowledge about different subjects. For example, when being assigned tasks such as homework or group projects, students are incentivized to work on such tasks in order to obtain high grades. This fosters a sense of work ethic and responsibility, both of which are crucial for their career prospects. Additionally, schools are also essential for children to develop interpersonal skills. When children go to school, they have the chance to interact with other people and even establish meaningful and intimate relationships with their peers. By only studying at home, however, they are likely to be reserved and asocial by the time they reach adulthood.

On the other hand, being overly reliant on the internet can be an impediment to the learning process. More precisely, the sheer amount of information on the internet is, without a doubt, boundless, and it can be virtually impossible for students to be selective and choose the right learning material without the support of a teacher. This is due to the fact that children have yet to fully develop their cognitive skills, particularly critical thinking. By contrast, the courses in the curriculum are carefully designed to cater for the majority of students.

In conclusion, although studying on the internet can be advantageous in some ways, I still firmly believe that going to school is vital for a child’s growth and development in the long run because of the social and practical benefits of schooling as well as the sheer amount of information available.
