WORK
Many people work at home using modern technology today. Some people think only the workers benefit from this, not the employers. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
The increasing sophistication of information technology allow employees to work from home with ease. While the workers certainly benefit from this, there is no consensus on whether the employers would also gain profit from this. Personally, I agree that the employers could also be benefitted from the home working policies, provided that a carefully designed monitoring system is implemented.
It is apparent that there are a vast number of advantages of working remotely for both employers and employees. Working from home can greatly promote productivity, as many people produce better work quality when there are no distractions. Yet some distractions in the office site may be inevitable because there will always be people walking around and chatting. In fact, according to a recent survey, homeworkers rank their productivity as 7.7/10, compared with 6.5/10 for office workers. Furthermore, the relatively relaxing atmosphere at home could give employees some freedom and flexibility with their schedule. For instance, if there is a sick child to be taken care of, workers can put the kid in bed and then carry out work besides the young one. Consequently, employees are generally happier when they work from home - which means there are more job satisfaction and less staff turnover rates. Besides, with less staff members, the firm can spend less expenditure on office space, technology and supplies.
However, I do acknowledge that there are risks to the corporate in agreeing the home working policy. Obviously, some workers may choose to take advantages of this policy and not working as hard as they would at the office because there are no supervisions or direct control. But overall, this situation could be improved by implementing effective key performance indicator systems. In other words, through specifying a number of achievable, measurable and realistic goals for the staff members to achieve in a fixed timeframe, the employers could easily ensure there are no slacking off behaviours regardless of where the staff is physically sitting.
Overall, working at home using modern technology is a great strategy for both employees and employers from social, economic and productivity perspectives. While there may be some downsides, they could be resolved.
