Thanks a bunch!!!
Many museums charge for admission while others are free.
Do you think the advantages of charging people for admission to museums outweigh the disadvantages?
It is true that while entrance fee to some museums is free, it is charged, even at a high level of price, at others. While there are some disadvantages of admission charge, I would argue that there are far more benefits.
On the one hand, charging for admission to museums may carry some drawbacks. The main drawback is that the amount of visitors might be decreased. When traveling to local places, tourists tend to prefer to pay a visit to free entry spots where they are given a chance to experience local culture without costing a penny. For example, to enter National Museum of Angkor in Cambodia, visitors have to pay USD12 per person, which is claimed to be incredibly pricey, given that USD20 buys admission to most of the temples at Angkor. As a result, many eventually opt for other choices instead of visiting the museum.
On the other hand, I believe that there are more benefits of the admission charge than disadvantages. Firstly, the amount of money taken from entrance fee could return to subsidize the museum. Setting up and maintaining museum’s activities can cost thousands of dollars and require an inordinate amount of time and energy. In fact, some museums are owned by local government while others are run by private companies. In either way, entrance fee together with other funds from selling souvenirs, gifts or holding activities can take some pressure off the owners’ budgets. Secondly, the charge can make visitors value the museums more, therefore, bring people more valuable experiences during the course of their visit.
To sum up, while I recognize the possible disadvantages of admission charge to museums, I consider it to be beneficial for both of management and visitors.
