IELTS Task 2

task 2

Advertising has been playing a key role in the last decades, and the birth of a field of study like Marketing, which has an increasing success, is putting always more importance on the way a product is designed and launched on the market. I disagree with the idea that whatever is launched on the market, represents an innovation.

In a world where people buy mass products, differentiation of products plays a vital role in specific sectors. In fact, nowadays the differentiation of products is a key of competition among firms, and the development of new features or technologies is what makes the difference between a good and a poorly designed product. This is particularly true for several electronic appliances such as phones or laptops, where the level of technology and innovation is high. The result is that this quest for innovation may have negative impacts. In fact, the continuous development of new products leads consumers to change products more frequently, although they still work properly. This represents a big issue, in particular for what concerns the recycling of some materials like plastic or lithium, which can pollute even more our dying planet. Besides, the pressure put by competitors may lead to the development of products that performs poorly, with a short life cycle, or, in several cases, can be even harmful for our health.

In my opinion, we should try to slow innovation because we, and our planet, cannot keep up with this pace. Firms should launch products on the market when their features can be helpful for people and not just to react to the new products of competitors.

Thank you in advance!
