Some think that all entertainment TV programmes should educate people about the importance of social issues. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
The notion of spreading the importance of social problems through entertaining programmes by broadcasting them on television has gained a lot of traction. To a certain extent, I agree that this is an effective method to educate people, especially children, however, I am firmly convinced that the audience should have the right to choose which content they want to watch on the television.
There are several reasons why people might argue that every entertainment TV programme ought to deliver lessons about social issues. Firstly, the main age group of audience of this genre is children, by attaching the lessons about society with their favourite TV programme, it is easier for the children to obtain the message. For instance, the director of a cartoon can subtly send the message of protecting the environment by creating the scene of an adorable animal, which might be the main character of the film, is running away from a bushfire. By using this method, the film director can instill the social problems in children's minds and urge them to find the solutions to address these problems.
On the other hand, I support the view that the audience should be free to choose the content they want to absorb. Since social issues tend to be serious, it can negatively affect the emotion and attitude of the audience. While entertainment programmes are supposed to amuse people, they should not involve content which can raise the level of anxiety of people. Take “Happy Tree Friends”, an American animation for children, for example, this TV series aims to educate children of social norms and deliver many lessons regarding the law respect, particularly traffic laws. However, this film has been criticized due to its inappropriately violent scenes and the way it exaggerates the seriousness of social issues. The result could be severe if the children try to mimic violent actions after they watch the movie.
In conclusion, using entertainment TV programmes to bring the audience educational lessons about social issues certainly has its benefits, but I believe that the drawbacks outweigh the benefits of this method.
