IELTS TASK 2

The extinction of different species is believed, by some people, to be the major threat to the environment while there are other problems concerning others. I stand by my opinion that the decrease in flora and fauna should be the main concerning issue.
Firstly, the disappearance of organisms can affect the natural balance. As every organism has its own natural enemies, the loss of one species can increase the number of its rivals, which can be a catastrophe in many cases. For example, the Chinese government once made a policy against sparrows due to the fact that sparrow ingested crops. As a result, the number of mantises had been increasing uncontrollably and, according to statistical evidence, the policy caused even greater damage to Chinese agriculture. Secondly, the decrease in diversity will make it harder for scientists to conduct research for the cures of diseases as the pharmaceutical industry depends heavily on numerous rare herbs and creatures. Therefore, protecting and preserving the species is vital to the existence of our societies. Failure to do so can wipe out part of the population as many diseases have done in the past.
In contrast, there are many other public concerned environmental issues such as the overexploiting of natural resources and global warming. These issues can harm our natural habitats in many ways but with the advance of technology, the researchers can certainly discover many effective methods to approach these problems. For example,
transportation is releasing less fume today compared to decades ago.
To conclude, although there are many noticeable problems related to the environment, I am still of the opinion that the main one should be about the loss of plants and animals.
