IELTS Task 2

Hi,

I would appreciate it if could check the following essay.

Smoking can cause serious illnesses and should be made illegal. To what extent do you agree?

There is no way around the fact that smoking is highly likely to do irreversible damages to health, and therefore should be banned. Yet, its illegalization cannot be without consequences.

To being with, that smoking may pose a risk to the smoker's health means it should be outlawed. Containing a staggering number of noxious substances, cigarettes may well put the smoker's health into serious danger, hence causing life-threatening diseases such as cardiovascular or hearth problems. Added to this is the possibility of lung and stomach cancer which is the byproduct of dragging on cigarettes.

In the second place, the smoke generated by cigarettes can exert a malign influence on the innocent bystanders. Provided that a chain smoker lights their cigarette in public places, the passive smokers would be - especially in the long run - in serious danger of contracting some fatal illnesses, let alone being exposed to the smoke indoors. In this regard, research has proven that secondhand smoke could endanger the birth of healthy children by causing infertility and low birth-weight or other congenital disorders.

Nonetheless, it should also be admitted that prohibiting smoking might not be advisable for some seemingly bona fide reasons. As a matter of fact, it is the sale of tobacco in the black market that can be the corollary of banning the activity, leading to higher levels of associated crime. The bottom line would be the prevalent addiction to other illicit and more mood-altering drugs, such as cocaine and marijuana, on the grounds that a pocket-a-day smoker would not be able to feed their addiction to tobacco.

All in all, ignoring the repercussions of outlawing smoking, it would be a wise proposal for the governments to ban smoking and put an end to the trade of tobacco products.
