IELTS TASK 2

When people migrate to new countries, they have to face the dilemma of whether to adapt to the cultures and traditions of host countries or continue to keep their custom. Personally, I totally agree with the statement that they should follow the custom of new countries.

There are many reasons why foreigners should be encouraged to adapt to new community. Firstly, each country has different culture, tradition and taboo. Therefore, if newcomer doesn’t conform to the norms of social behaviour, the chance he or she might fall foul is relatively high. For example, some Western tourists wear unsuitable clothes or expose too much skin in temples or scared places in Viet Nam, which cause irritation and frustration in the locals. Secondly, immigrants could be isolated from the new community. This could cause negative effects on their daily life, especially children. If children don’t blend into new environment in school and make new friend because of the different custom and culture, they could be depressed and isolated.

There are many benefits for foreigners when they choose to follow the customs and traditions of host countries. One advantage is that immigrants will receive welcoming treatment from the residents, when they feel that newcomers are showing respects for the local way of life. As a result, the establishment of closer links between newcomer and local people will leads to greater integration and mutual understanding. Another advantage is that foreigners could be able to take part in the new community life, which could help them understand more about tradition and person of host countries. Consequently, in some special occasion or festival they could easily immerge themselves in the atmosphere of this events and feel like they belong in their new country.

In conclusion, I would argue that it would be better for newcomers to adapt to the traditions and habits of the locals in the host community in order to have integration and closer relationship.
