IELTS Task 1 writing (a Bar chart)

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

The chart gives information on the percentage of women going into higher education in five countries for the years 1970 and 2005.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.




The bar chart shows the percentage of females from five different countries who went for higher education after finishing school. The selected countries are the UK, the USA, Canada, Japan and Germany, and the data for the years 1970 and 2005 are given.


Canada had the largest percentage with 60% in both two years, while Japan had the 5th rank among the five countries in both 1970 (20%) and 2005 (40%). The USA ranked third in both of the years with 40% and about 58% for the years 1970 and 2005 respectively.


The percentage of women who continue studying for higher education increased in all countries between 1970 and 2005 except Canada which this proportion remained constant for these two years. Among countries with an increasing trend in the mentioned percentage, Japan had the maximum increase (by 100%) and Germany had the minimum rise in this context with just by 10% increase (50% in 1970 to 55% in 2005).


Overall, almost all countries experienced a growth in the percentage of women who went to college after high school except Canada which had no change in this matter.
