IELTS Task 1: Two pie charts about energy use and greenhouse gas emissions

Question

The first pie chart provides data about energy consumption for five categorised commodities in a typical Australian family. The second pie chart, meanwhile, illustrates the percentage of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from these categories.

Overall, a significant majority of energy is used for heating and water heating. Additionally, energy consumption for heating water emits the most greenhouse gas comparing to the others.

Energy used for heating makes up 42%, as opposed to 30% of the energy spent on water heating. Interestingly, the greenhouse gas emission from heating is only 15%, which is about two times less than the emission from water heating, 32%. Furthermore, other household appliances consume only a fifth of the energy use but this usage constitutes 28% of the total amount of carbon pollution, which almost doubles the amount of gas from heating.

Regarding the remaining categories, while the energy use for refrigeration makes up 17%, lighting and cooling take a relatively small amount of energy which is 4% and 2% respectively. In terms of CO2 emissions, they are 14% from refrigeration, 8% from lighting, and 3% from cooling.
