IELTS TASK 1: The percentages of the Canadian Workforce

The bar chart shows the percentages of the Canadian workforce in five major industries in 1850 and 2020. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.


The bar chart compares the proportion of Canadian workers in five different business sectors in two years – 1850 and 2020. They are manufacturing, services, agriculture and fishing, construction, and energy and water.

Overall, the difference between the industries in terms of worker proportion was larger in 2020 than that in 1850. Among five major industries, two increased in workforce percentage whereas two decreased.

Services was the industry that had the most significant increase in worker proportion, rising to over two times the initial percentage by the end of 2020. Construction moderately increased from 5% in 1850 to 8% in 2020.

The proportion of the workforce in manufacturing fell by three fourth the original amount in 2020. The industry which had the most dramatic decrease in worker percentage was Agriculture and Fishing which went down from 22% in 1850 to only 1% in 2020. In 1850, Energy and Water had a workforce percentage of 3% before decreasing to just 1% in 2020.
