IELTS Task 1 - Public transit in Melbourne - Please help

The charts present the variations in the number of Melbourne people taking public transport from 1989 to 2009, as well as that of those using the bus and tram in the period from 2000 to 2008.

Looking now at the first graph, it is clear that people in Melbourne used public transit in 2009 considerably more than they did in 1989. In the first five years, the number of public transport passengers stayed consistent at less than 300 units, then it gradually rose over the next decade. Over the last five years, it had dramatically soared before ending up at 500 units, almost doubling the number it reached twenty years before.

Moving on to the second chart, one can see a similar upward trend, especially in the number of bus passengers. Its figure started lower, at roughly 120 units, but had shot up, and surpassed the number of tram riders by the year 2008. After fluctuating over the first six years, tram passenger number also enjoyed a notable increase and ended up at 200 million people, approximately 10% lower than the number of bus riders.
