The graph plots the quantities of goods transported in the UK during the 28 years from 1974 to 2002 by four different modes of transport ( road, water, rail, pipeline). The units of measurement are a
million tonnes.
Overall, the amount of delivery by road was the highest value, whereas the pipeline was the lowest value in the set data. Interestingly, there was an increase in the amounts of delivery by road, water and pipeline throughout the period.
Strikingly, there was a negative correlation between the quantities of goods transported by road and pipeline. The statistic of the road started at about 70 in 1974 and increased mildly; then it ended up at nearly 100 in 2002. Simultaneously, starting at roughly 5 in 1974 in the amount of delivery by pipeline, and then reached a peak at barely over 20, which had a plateau in the remainder of the period.
Meanwhile, both remainders follow two opposite trends during this time. In particular, both statistics started at nearly 40 in 2974 and leveled off. By 2002, the quantities of goods transported by water had a dramatic elevation from about 40 to slightly over 70, rising almost 35%. In contrast, there was a gradual reduction of quantities in the amount of delivery by rail, which ended up at a little 25 in 1995, and then recovered at slightly over 40 afterward.
