Ielts Task 1 - Building an igloo

The diagrams illustrate the process of building an igloo.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

The illustrations detail the steps involved in the construction of an igloo.

Overall, there are 13 steps, starting from finding hard-packed snow and ending with cutting ventilation holes on walls and roof. It can be seen that the building of an igloo is a non labour-intensive process.

To begin with, the hard-packed snow is cut into rectangular blocks using a snow saw. The large ones are used exclusively for the base. Afterwards, the saw continues to be used for smoothing the edges of the snow blocks. These blocks are then placed and piled up in a circular way, before an entrance is created by digging holes under the wall. The last opening on top of the igloo is filled by a large block, carefully carved to the exact size.

The igloo now only needs some final touch-ups. Snow will be thrown on the exterior wall of the igloo to cover the crevices. Subsequently, the interior will be smoothed manually. Next, the main entrance is formed and the hole underneath is covered by building up some snow blocks which resemble a house roof. Finally, ventilation holes are cut on the walls and the roof, allowing the air to enter and the igloo is ready for accommodation.
