---------------------------------------------

The bar chart illustrates the proportion of owned and rented accommodation in two different countries from 1918 to 2011.

Overall, there was an upward trend in the proportion of households in owned accommodation, whereas that of households in rented one witnessed a steady decrease during the period shown. The higher percentage of households was rented accommodation until 1961, but was lower than that of households in owned accommodation.

In 1918, the percentage of families in rented housing was over three times as high as that of families in owned accommodation, at around 76% and 23% respectively. While the percentage of rented accommodation saw a decline in the following years, that of owned accommodation increased significantly until the two categories had the same rate in 1971, both at 50%. In subsequent years, the percentage of households in owned accommodation reached a peak of 69% in 2001 before slightly going down in 2011, at roughly 64%. However, the percentage of rented housing fell the its lowest point in 2001, at approximately 31% and had a minimal recovery at 36% in 2011.
