IELTS Task 1 (a line graph and a table)
The graph and table below give information about water use worldwide and water consumption in two different countries.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words.
The line graph shows global water consumption by three different sectors which are agriculture, industries and domestic uses in the period of 1900-2000, while the table gives some information like population, irrigated land area and water use per capita in 2000 for two countries: Brazil and The Congo.
We can see that the water use had steadily increased during the past century in all mentioned sectors and that the amount of water used by a Brazilian person is highly greater than what consumed in The Congo.
The line graph shows that agriculture was responsible for the most water consumption in the world through the 20th century, and the volume of water used in this sector reached to about 3000 km3 in 2000, while industrial and domestic uses ranked second and third (approximately 1000 km3and less than 500 km3, respectively in that year).
It could be seen that on average, Brazilian people used water several times more than people who lived in The Congo (359 m3 versus 8 m3) in the year 2000. Although, it should be noted that the population and irrigated land area of Brazil were very large when compared to The Congo. Brazil had around 35 times more population, 265 times more irrigated land and just under 45 times higher water consumption per person.
