The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparison where relevant.

The bar chart illustrates the proportion of occupants who owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales over a period of 93 years. Overall, it can be clearly seen that rented accommodation was higher than owned in the beginning years whereas the later patterns showed the opposite.

It is noticeable that a large proportion of families chose to rent houses between 1918 and 1961. The rented accommodation rose to a peak of nearly 80% of households owning initially, then the figure experienced a slight drop at around 70% in 1939 and remained at that in 1953, the proportion in the year later was not as much as the previous years, accounting for 60% renting houses.

In contrast, the owned accommodation saw an upward trend between 1981 and 2011. The proportion of owned housing increased by 60% of households accommodation, this figure developed rapidly in number the number of usages, at 68% and 69% respectively. A significant majority of owned houses ( 63%)which witnessed in the final year.

The one year that showed a different pattern was is1971. A similar number of accommodations utilized houses in both groups accounting for half in total.
