The table illustrates transportation preference by British commuters according to the distance over a 15- year period starting from 1985.

In general, it is apparent that the total number of miles traveled by English people using all modes of transport increased significantly over the survey. Additionally, the transport most people would choose as their favorite was car.

As can be seen, the average distance people went to work on foot, by bike and local bus saw a downward trend between 1985 and 2000. To be more specific, there was a fall from 255 miles to 237 miles in terms of walking method. Furthermore, in 1985 English used the bike as a means of transport for the 51-mile distance whereas this figure decreased to 41 miles after 15 years. Local bus also experienced a halving to 274 miles by 2000.

In contrast, there was an opposite trend for remaining modes from 1985 to 2000. In 1985, the average people travelled 3199 miles by car, and this figure continued to rise dramatically at 4806 miles. The figures for travel by train, local distance bus and other modes shared the similar trend. Travel by taxi saw a significant change, with more than a threefold increase from 13 miles per person to 42 miles in 2000.
