IELTS - Please give me some advice

In many countries today, people in cities live alone or in small family units, rather than in large family groups. Is this a positive or negative trend?

Instead of living in extended families, people nowadays have a tendency to prefer to stay in nuclear families or living alone. In my opinion, this phenomenon brings both pros and cons.

On the one hand, settling down in a smaller family structure can avoid the generation gap which usually occurs in a big family with several generations. As we are living in the 21st century which is a completely far cry from the previous period, the young can afford to adapt to new circumstances instantly, while the older people still set in their mind and forces their children to obey the traditional practices. Take some tribes in Vietnam as an example, parents intend to arrange their children’s marriage which they confirm it will guarantee the wealthy life for their offspring’s future, regardless of the hostility of their children. This depraved custom creates a big controversy unintentionally for all family members directly leading to the separation in both their relationship and their accommodation so that they might satisfy their individual life.

On the other hand, the propensity of living in small family components probably triggers the shortage of caring thoroughly from other generation, especially when the children live in a single-parent family. In a fast-changing world, while people are increasingly aware of the competition in the extreme job market which will eliminate any vulnerable staff, they have no choice except concentrating on their work to get higher promotion as well as guarantee the stable living standards for their family. Since this burden lays much pressure on adults’ role which seems to isolate them from parental responsibility, their kids require grandparents' attention or other relatives’ caring aiming to have a sense of mercy. If children live in a narrower family pattern, they will no longer neglect themselves from social relationships and become a terrible person causing numerous social evils for their nation owning to lacking parental care.

All in all, this trend sparks all family members involved to distinct generations to have a more comfortable life, whereas it might remove the role of parents to nurture their children. Due to the balance between positive and negative aspects, I concur the judgment depends on different people’s ideas.
