IELTS GT Task 2: Elderly people are nowadays being sent to old aged homes.

Elderly people are nowadays being sent to old aged homes rather than being looked after by family in homes. Do the advantages of old aged homes outweigh the disadvantages?

People tend to be busy in their lives due to hectic schedules. Thus, instead of looking after their old-age parents or grandparents, they send them to old aged homes. The main benefits of this, proper care of elderly people and their healthiness, greatly outweigh the drawbacks.

Admittedly, there are some minor drawbacks when older people are admitted in nursing care centers. First, these institutes charge exorbitant fees because they usually employ professional staff for handling elderly people. As they are physically weak and require utmost care round-the-clock, these centers demand higher fees from their legal heirs. Another problem with these institutions is that once admitted older people feel lonely there. The reason is they hardly share their personal feelings or emotions with other people and hence suffer from loneliness. For instance, The Long Life, the largest old age home of Kenya, provides services to more than ten thousand citizens. It is reported that many people admitted here suffer from ailments, related to stress, due to loneliness.

Conversely, there are two primary benefits for older people when they get admitted in old age homes. The first advantage is that they receive proper care and attention. That is to say that highly professional and trained staff looks after them and handle them attentively. As a result, they remain happily and enjoy their retired life. Since they are looked after by trained employees, another benefit is that they feel healthy. This is because they are provided with meals and medicines on time and are avoided from unhealthy things, such as smoking. The Vintage, for example, is the renowned professional center for older people in Delhi, the capital of India. It was rated as the best institution of India for caring retired persons in 2017 due to its skilled employees.

In conclusion, the drawbacks of old age homes, loneliness and exorbitant fees, are far overshadowed by the benefits.
