Ielts essay: Work to earn money

Topic: The main reason people go to work is to earn money. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

People have different purposes for joining the job market. While I agree that the most common reason why people go to work is to earn money, I also reckon that some other factors are equally important.

Before taking any other factors into account, it is understandable to first consider the salary paid by employers when beginning a new job. Unarguably, everybody needs money for food, accommodation, paying bills and so forth. The need of earning money even increases greatly when people start their marriage life with various types of demand, ranging from basic necessities such as buying a house to settle down and raising their kids, to those supporting their own leisure pursuit and personal development. If they work hard but do not receive the amount of payment they deserve, they will be likely to have a feeling of inequality. This feeling, as a result, might deter them from devoting to their jobs.

Apart from money concern expressed above, there are several other reasons why people take up a job. Most, if not all, adults desire to be perceived as a productive member of society by working hard; otherwise, they will probably have a sense of uselessness. Besides, the majority of adults go to work because they are afraid of being out-of-date. In other words, living in working environment on a daily basis allows employees to continue broadening their knowledge in their specialized area and sharpening their employability skills.

In conclusion, it seems to me that salary is the key motivation for most adults to go to work, while other factors such as contribution to society and personal skill enhancement are also commonly taken into consideration.
