Some people think that good health is a basic human need, so medical services should not be run by profit-making companies. Do you think the advantages of private health care outweigh the disadvantages?
A few people are of the view that good health is a primary need of every human being and private corporates should not be in this business the sole purpose of which is to make money. In my opinion, the companies providing these services bring more advantages to the public compared to any drawbacks it might bring.
Admittedly, there are some minor drawbacks of private health care setup. One serious problem is exorbitant bills these private hospitals charge to patients which many people cannot afford. The reason is they usually employ experienced surgeons and other paramedical staff who demand higher perks and benefits which increases their cost. As a result, they demand customers to pay the higher amounts of medical treatment. Another possible issue is that there is a long queue of patients at these private run hospitals. Since government hospitals do not provide quality services, numerous patients prefer to get treatment from these centres. The average patient pays USD 6,000 in the Arab Medical Institute in UAE, for instance, compared to USD 2,000 for the same treatment in government institutes even though they wait for two to three months for their turn.
On the positive side, the main benefits of these privately-run hospitals are the availability of best doctors and medicines. That is to say that highly qualified and experienced doctors are on their panel who usually do not sit in government hospitals because of many reasons. Their qualification and status encourage many people to get treatment from these hospitals despite their higher charges. In addition, these profit-making institutes make sure that all the medicines are available, especially life-saving drugs, that is sometimes in short supply. This is because they normally import all the required medicines that is crucial for the health of people. The Delhi Hospital, the largest hospital in India, for example, has appointed most of the foreign doctors of the USA and imports all the medicines from China. This is the reason that most citizens of India prefer this in spite of the higher treatment cost.
In conclusion, I think that the positive aspects of the services of private companies, which are availability of quality services and medicines, greatly outweigh its drawbacks.
