Ielts essay: Government should spend more money on railways

Governments should spend more money on railways rather than roads.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Today it is true that governments are employing various methods to improve transportation system as a way to promote citizen’s quality of life. I totally agree with a suggestion that train transport should be subsidized more than road transport because of its benefits for our society as a whole.

First of all, railway itself is considered to be safer compared to any other means of transportation such as road or sea. The percentage of railway-related accidents always remains at a low rate, which is also one of the reasons why many people often opt to use trains for long journeys.

Second of all, more citizens choosing to take the trains might reduce pressure on other modes of transportation such as roads transport or airplanes, which are suffering severe stress from overpopulation situation. Researchers have shown that together with globalization and higher standard of living, citizens tend to use more private vehicles and travel more around the world by flying. As a bonus, congestion situation might be resolved more effectively in urban cities when people prefer to catch the trains rather than waiting in the line of traffic jam for hours.

Finally, by encouraging people to transport by trains, governments could decrease the negative effects, particularly air pollution, on the environment. Less people driving cars on the street, for example, means less emissions discharged and less certain amount of carbon dioxide released directly into the atmosphere, which is the root cause of global warming, let alone the depletion of natural resources. Furthermore, the relative energy-efficiency of trains also means that the industry is less vulnerable to the increases in fuel prices, making train fares more stable in an unstable economy.

Thanks to many significant benefits the railways bring to both society and economy, I strongly believe that it is necessary for governments to finance the rail transport more than roads or other transportation facilities.
