IELTS essay: employment vs university degree.

Some people think that getting a degree from university is the best way to secure a good job. Others believe that employers value work experience more than a university degree. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

It is believed by some that obtaining a tertiary education is crucial to secure a well-paid job while others disagree and hold the view that practical experience is more important than securing a degree. I agree with the former view and believe that graduating from a university helps people to land in a good job.

On the one hand, some people are of the opinion that third-level education is vital for obtaining a great employment. The reason is that many employers today prefer candidates who have at least completed their tertiary education. In other words, it has become a bare minimum requirement for getting a well-paid job in a well-reputed company. Another reason is that people study multitude of theoretical techniques and methodologies when they get qualification from a university. Take engineers as an example. The study numerous books while spending two to three years in institutes. Mechanics cannot become engineers in spite of having more work experience then engineers because they lack advance knowledge of engineering methods.

On the other hand, many believe that practical experience is key and preferred by many employers than degrees. They believe so because people learn countless things when they obtain hands-on experience. That is to say that chances of mistakes are reduced significantly despite they do not possess any degree. Thus, their employment prospects are much better than a university qualified person. It is reported that experienced cashiers, for instance, earn more than recent graduates in various banks of Bangladesh even though they are less qualified. However, third-level education enables people to progress faster than others in their careers.

In conclusion, although many people believe that work experience is more important than obtaining a tertiary education, I take the view that a degree plays a key role if one wants a good job. This is because education equip people with theoretical knowledge and techniques which become hindrance in the progress of experienced people.
