In some countries, young people are encouraged to work or travel for an year between finishing high school and starting university studies.
Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?

Taking an year’s gap after schooling and before commencing the tertiary education is becoming prevalent among youngsters of several nations. Although there are some drawbacks of this trend, I would argue that there are far more benefits.

The main drawback of this development can be difficult to resume studies after one year’s gap. As young ones have diverted their mind, to explore different places, from education, it can be challenging for them to cope with study in the same pace again. Similarly, a number of students would prefer not to continue their education after working for year. They might consider earning money far more viable decision than studying further because after education, they again have to start work from beginning. If they do not go for higher education, there can be scarcity of educated people in the country.

Despite negatives mentioned above, I consider it to be a positive development for two main reasons. Firstly, while travelling, young ones get acquainted with a wide variety of cultures, languages and people. This can widen their knowledge and understanding about life. Secondly, it tends to become convenient for young people to decide their career path by working for one year. Take Tokyo, for example. After schooling, it is mandatory for every student of the city to work for one year. By working they know the field of their interest and pursue higher education in that field. That’s why Tokyo’s students have clarity about their career.

In conclusion, while I recognize the possible disadvantages of taking an year off before higher education, I consider it to be a positive development overall.
